Data Protection Manager 2010 – Backup to [empty] Disk

When I transfered most of my VMs over to shared storage, I didn’t really have the time (or money) to build a respectable storage environment. Needless to say there are some VMs that are stored on non-redundant storage….but most are on at least a RAID1 volume. It was at this time I decided to install Data Protection Manager 2010 and start getting things backed up. Obviously I will be using backup-to-disk as 1. no tape … Read more…

Network Time vs. Hyper-V Time syncronization

I have dealt with incorrectly configured NTP in a domain several times – the worst case was where all client computers were off by 14 minutes from real time! Why did this happen? That happened because the GPO and w32tm settings were configured completely wrong and the authoritative time source for the domain was a local servers local hardware clock. The proper configuration for NTP in a domain is a whole post in itself, and … Read more…

Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 1 – Enabling Dynamic Memory

In a mad dash to “reclaim some of my memory”, I built a DC with some spare hardware, and begun the installation of SP1 on my 2008 R2 host – if you’re wondering why I did that, my [only] other domain controller is a VM. The install was uneventful – I ate dinner while it was going on. When I came back, the two VMs that I had left running were now saved, and SP1 … Read more…

Data ONTAP Simulator on Hyper-V R2

Prior to updating to Server 2008 R2, I had a 1.0 VM running the Data ONTAP Simulator. I had never rebuilt or restored it after the host upgrade, so I figured I would give it a shot. I still had the old VHD – but there was a problem – there was also a snapshot, and I had no idea if it was current, or what. After I created the new VM and added the … Read more…

TS Web Access Upgrade to 2008R2 – RD Web

Just got most of the upgrade done for my home RDS setup- upgraded the TS box from 2008 to 2008R2 – thus making it an RDS box (Terminal Services is no longer…it is now Remote Desktop Services). I also upgraded the Web Portal\RD Gateway to a 2008R2 box. I have got to say, with the upgrade are some MUCH NEEDED improvements. One thing I had never tried before was the Desktop Composition remoting (aero glass … Read more…

Error removing VHD

After adding the old web server’s VHD to get the web files onto the new web server, I tried to remove the old VHD…only to fail with the following error: Error Removing Hard Drive Failed to remove device ‘Microsoft Synthetic Disk Drive’: Generic failure (0x80041001) Providing no hint at why this happened aside from “cannot be deleted because a logical disk object is still attached to it.” I powered on the VM and offlined the … Read more…

Classic ASP on IIS 7.5

I had thrown together a website for the sole purpose of getting information out about our wedding last year- there were a bunch of photos, directions to the venue, and I also coded a simple way to RSVP online via the website. Having not yet learned enough .NET (and I still really don’t know enough) I used classic ASP with “code behind” in Script Objects. It worked fairly well…wasn’t the most ‘pretty’ website, but it worked well [enough] … Read more…
